Healthy trees add beauty, shade, and value to your property, but can you tell if your trees are truly thriving? Knowing the difference between a healthy tree and one that’s in distress can help you act early and avoid costly problems.

Tree Care: How to Determine If Your Trees are Healthy

As a tree care professional, we want to share some signs your trees are doing well:

  • Vibrant, full leaves—During the growing season of the year, your trees should have vibrant and full leaves. This foliage should also be evenly distributed across the tree canopy, with minimal dead or bare branches.
  • Strong branch structure—The limbs on your trees should appear sturdy and well-spaced. They shouldn’t cross or rub against each other.
  • Intact bark—Your tree bark should be intact, and there shouldn’t be any cracks, peeling, or missing sections.
  • Steady annual growth—Every year, your tree should have new shoots and leaves, which is a key indicator that your tree is doing well.

There are also warning signs that your trees could use help from a tree care professional. For example, if you have sparse or discolored leaves, especially outside of seasonal changes, this could indicate your tree has a disease or is deficient in nutrients. If there are cracks in the trunk, fungal growth near the base, or decaying wood, these can all indicate your tree could use some extra care.
