Some tree services are one-time occasions or even services you hope you won’t need, like tree removal. Others need to be done on a routine basis. Tree pruning and tree trimming, for example, should be done regularly to keep your trees in the best possible condition. While these terms are often used interchangeably and do share some significant similarities, there are some subtle differences between them.
Tree Pruning
Tree pruning is done primarily for the health of the tree. By removing diseased branches, crossed limbs, branches that are touching each other, and branches that are larger than the trunk, arborists protect the tree from damage and promote healthy growth. Pruning also helps trees produce good fruits and trains the tree to grow in the way you intend, not to mention that it increases safety by removing branches that could be a hazard if they fall.
Tree Trimming
Tree trimming is mostly a cosmetic service and isn’t necessarily concerned with making the tree healthier. Tree trimming may involve cutting off branches that are growing at an abnormal angle or making the tree look funny. It keeps trees looking neat and uniform while keeping the canopy well shaped.
When Should Tree Pruning and Trimming Be Done?
The best time for tree pruning and trimming is in the winter, when trees are dormant and can heal more effectively from being cut. It’s also a good time to care for your trees this way in the winter because the bare tree won’t have leaves that get in the way of the arborist’s visibility.
